Converting Word Processing Documents into Web Pages

Information

How many word processing documents do you have that you wish you could convert to HTML (Web page) without having to retype the document? Well, there are two ways to convert a word processing document to HTML.

Since most teachers have AppleWorks (ClarisWorks), these instructions will focus on how to convert AppleWorks documents into HTML, but most other word processing software have similar steps.

Activity #1

Now you are going to work with another program, and since the computer you're on may not be able to run Netscape, Home Page and AppleWorks all at the same time -- CLOSE FileMaker Home Page and be sure to save your work.

1. Open a blank document in AppleWorks (ClarisWorks).

2. Type a title and center it, and then type a short paragraph of information.

3. Select File -- Save As

4. Locate where you want to save the Web page. "Toggle" to find the Web server or create a folder in the Documents folder and then later you can upload it into the Web server.

5. Give the document a new name -- "Practice.html"

6. Locate the pull down menu where it says "ClarisWorks" and click-hold. Select "HTML" and let go.

Activity #2

Once you save this HTML document you can open it through FileMaker Home Page. By opening it in FileMaker Home Page you can do all the editing that you would normally do. Change the background color to make sure it works. When you select "Save," the computer will change the AppleWorks HTML document into a FileMaker Home Page document.

Activity #3

Let's try another one, but this time the AppleWorks document will contain a graphic item.

1. Open a blank document in AppleWorks (ClarisWorks).

2. Type a title and center it, and then type a short paragraph of information.

3. Select an item from the clip art file.

4. Select File -- Save As

5. Locate where you want to save the Web page. "Toggle" to find the Web server or create a folder in the Documents folder and then later you can upload it into the Web server.

6. Give the document a new name -- "Graphic.html"

6. Locate the pull down menu where it says "ClarisWorks" and click-hold. Select "HTML" and let go.

Information

What happens if you move the graphic ".gif" just created in the above activity into the Image folder? Notice that the graphic on the HTML page now has a broken link. You could either consolidate or simply relink the graphic to the correct location.

Information

The second way to change a word processing document is to copy and paste. Use this method if the word processing software you are using doesn't allow you to convert your document into HTML format, or if you just want to move part of a document.

When you're finished, you can throw away the two practice HTML pages your created in your folder.
