E-Update Special Edition for the 2009 Kansas FFA State Convention
 
Holton FFA members, parents, and alumni were actively involved in the 81st Kansas FFA Convention held on the campus of Kansas State University May 26th through the 29th.  More information can be found at:
 
FFA Freshman Shannon Maxwell named State Creed Speaking Champion
        Shannon Maxwell, a member of the Holton FFA chapter, took home top honors in the Kansas FFA Creed Speaking Career Development Event (CDE). The four finalists of the event were Naicee Gugelmeyer, South Barber FFA, who placed second; Theo Kassebaum, Centre FFA, who placed third; and Jordan Bell, Hill City FFA, who placed fourth. The Creed Speaking CDE develops public speaking skills in younger members as only greenhands, first year members, are eligible to compete.
 
Parliamentary Procedure Team finishes as State Champions
    The team of Kayla Klahr, Kate Gooderl, Mary Burns, Dillon Klahr, Carrie Karns, and Amanda Spade placed first in the Kansas FFA Parliamentary Procedure Career Development Event.  The team advanced to the state “Final Four” after competing in the state semifinals on Tuesday afternoon.  After performing a demonstration of their debate and parliamentary procedure knowledge as well as taking a written test and answering oral questions, the final Kansas FFA Rankings were:  Holton FFA – 1st, Clay Center FFA – 2nd, Riverton FFA  - 3rd, and Marysville – 4th.  For a list of all State Champion Holton FFA Teams click here: http://www.holton.k12.ks.us/ffa/hallofchamps.html
 
Environmental Science Team Recognized
    The FFA Envirothon Team of Amanda Spade, Josh Shields, Mike Myers, Mary Burns, and Joe Kimbrough was “officially” recognized for qualifying for the National FFA Environmental Science Career Development Event in Indianapolis, Indiana this October during National FFA Convention.  The team is coached by Mr. Bartel.  For a list of all State Champion Holton FFA Teams click here: http://www.holton.k12.ks.us/ffa/hallofchamps.html
 
Four Members Receive State FFA Degree
    Five Holton FFA seniors received the Gold Charm of the State FFA Degrees during Convention.  Whitney Gragg, Kayla Klahr, Brittany Robbins, and Sarah Robbins. all received the recognition, which is the highest that the state can confer upon member.  For a list of all past state degree recipients from Holton click here: http://www.holton.k12.ks.us/ffa/statedegrees.html
 
State FFA Proficiency Award Winners
    Four Holton FFA Members were recognized as state proficiency award winners:  Kayla Klahr in Agricultural Education, Ethan Phillips in Dairy Production Placement, Kurt Zibell in Forage Production, and Micah Harman in Forest Management and Products.  For being named a state champion these students each received a plaque and $250 cash award, on stage recognition in the state proficiency award pageant, a special banquet for them and their parents, and the right to submit their applications on to the national level.  To see the list of past state proficiency award winners from Holton click here: http://www.holton.k12.ks.us/ffa/stprof.html
 
Klahr Makes Bid for State FFA Office
    Kayla Klahr was extra busy during state FFA convention as she interviewed as a candidate for State FFA Office.  The 2009 Holton FFA Graduate spent hours participating in interviews, giving speeches, presenting workshops, and working on behalf of the Kansas FFA.  Although not selected for a state office, Kayla did an outstanding job representing herself, her family, and Holton High School throughout the week.  Excellent job Kayla, we are very proud of you!
        The 2009-10 Kansas FFA Officers elected were:  President - Garrett Lister, Marysville; Vice President - Nellie Hill, Centre; Secretary - Allison Penner, Clay Center; Treasurer - Hannah Miller, Chapman; Reporter - Alyson McCall, Minneapolis; and Sentinel - Zach Langford, Buhler FFA.
 
FFA Convention Delegates
    Dillon Klahr and Elaine Chartier served as official convention voting delegates from the Holton FFA Chapter.  Their responsibilities included serving on convention committees,  participating in business sessions, voting on constitutional amendments, and
    
Special Thanks and Gratitude!!!
    The Holton FFA would like to send a special word of thanks to Mr. Bartel’s parents, Stan and Myrna Bartel.  The Bartel’s let chapter members stay in their homes instead of spending chapter funds on motel rooms for the week.  Words cannot appropriately express our thanks!!!
