Teen Stereotyping

A stereotype reflects ideas that groups of people have about others who are different from them.  Stereotyping individuals can have many harmful effects such as eating disorders, low self-esteem, experimenting with drugs and alcohol, and many others.

We have all stereotyped another person or group at some point in our life.  Some of our assumptions are based on statement that aren’t even. true.  People tend to judge all the time, and while it is best not to form an opinion right away, stereotyping does not get really dangerous until it begins to lead to other things.

It isn’t fair to paint everyone in a group with the same brush because in life everyone is different in a unique way.

We interviewed a few freshman at Holton High School and asked  what their thought was about stereotyping. This is what they said,

“I believe stereotyping is bad because it doesn’t give everyone a chance.  It hurts people’s feelings.  Stereotyping is not true most of the time, it is just based on what we think and not what we know.”

“I think stereotyping is mean, it’s disrespectful, and people shouldn’t do it.”

“I think that it really hurts people and it is becoming a big problem among teenagers.”
