Art

The Art Departmnt will offer Art 1, Advanced Art, and Graphic Design for an entire year. Semester courses offering specific medias will be offered during the two semesters to allow students to experience a wider variety of course content.One fine arts credit is required for graduation. ALL art classes qualify as fine arts.

Art 1- 1 credit, 9-11, or with special permission for seniors

This course consists of 4 nine week units, plus a history of art which is included throughout the year. Each nine weeks, the student will research an artist and write a paper based upon that research. The four units of the class are:

a) Drawing- the first two units of the class will cover line concepts, blind contour, limited contour, prespective drawing, composition of geometric shapes, still life composition, graphic design, space representation, outdoor sketching, landscape composition, figure construction, and portraits. The student will become familiar with pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, and pastels.

b) Crafts- third nine weeks offers a limited exposure to printing, textiles, ceramics, and sculpting.

c) Color Theory- fourth nine weeks, painting in watercolors: learning the tecniques of wet and dry, wet on wet and dry brush. Students should develop an individual style and be able to see the total effects rather than part.

Printing and Fibers- 1/2 credit, 10-12, PreReq: Art 1 (offered 1st Semester)

This course is designed to introduce the methods of printing and fibers. Art history is continued throughout the course with research and reports. Students will be responsible for project costs. Must enroll in Crafts.

Stained Glass and Mosaics- 1/2 credit, 10-12, PreReq: Art 1 (offered 1st Semester)

This course is designed to introduce the methods of stained glass and mosaics. Art History is continued thoughout the course with research and reports. Students will be responsible for project costs. Must enroll in Crafts.

3D Miscellaneous- 1/2 credit, 10-12, PreReq: Art 1 (offered 2nd Semester)

This course is designed to introduce the methods of wood carving, folk art, baskets, and batik. Art History is continued throughout the course with research and reports. Students will be resposible for project costs. Must enroll in Crafts.

Tile Paintings and Hand- Built Ceramics- 1/2 credit, 10-12, PreReq: Art 1 (offered 2nd Semester)

This course is designed to introduce the methods of tile painting and hand-built ceramics. Art History is continued thourghout the course with research and reports. Students will be responsible for project costs. Must enroll in Crafts.

Painting 1- 1/2 credit, 10-12, PreReq: Art 1 (Offered 2nd Semester)

This course consists of 2 nine week sections: (1) first nine weeks will consist of color theory, including light and pigment, composition, outdoor drawing, still life drawing, life drawing, and the introduction to watercolor, (2) second nine weeks will consist of techniquies of watercolor, (3) third nine weeks will consist of aqua medias, tempera watercolor, acrylic and colored inks, (4) fourth nine weeks will consist of techniques of oil painting. Three exhibits per semster is requried. Art History will be continued throughout the course. Students will be responsible for project costs.

Painting 2&3- 1/2 credit, 11-12, PreReq: Art 1 and Painting 1 (Offered 2nd Semester)

This course will cover advanced drawing techniques, color theory, watercolors, acrylics, oils, mixed medias, and composition.This includes a minimum of six paintings per nine weeks. each painting will be critiqued by the student, his/her fellow classmates and the instructor. Art History will be continued throughout the course. Each student will be responsible for project costs.

Graphic Design- 1/2 credit, 10-12, pre-req:Art 1 and basic computers

This course will instruct in the basic software and design for computer graphics. The first nine weeks are spent learning the traditional format for creations in the design field. The student will be expected to develop creative styles and original designs based upon the individual requests of the customers seeking techinical assitance. The student will be expected to be proficient with the software Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, and the other graphics progams during second semester. Students are invloved in a variety of individual projects including, but not limited to, one business related project and on client based project. Can be either first semester or year long.

Advanced Graphic Design - 1/2 credit, 11-12, PreReq: B or above in Graphic Design and Instructor approval

This course is client based and students will be working with clients in the community for on the job training.

Capstone Program Client Based Graphics- 1/2 credit, 11-12, Pre-req: B or above in graphic design and instructor approval

Student will develop appropriate business cards, stationary heading, time sheet and billing sheet. They will develop a hard copt and c.d. portfolio to properly keep records of their work. The student will contact three clients from the class room list, set up interviews, work on grapgics for customers, and present a satisfactory finished product to the client on which they will sign off to show their approval. Second semester client will compete for customers and develop web pages to advertise their graphic skills.

Crafts 1 (2nd semester)- 1 credit, 10-12, Pre-req: Art 1

This course will consist of four nine weeks. Art history is continued throughout the course with research and reports. The first nine weeks will consist of pringting, calligraphy, color theory, and etching. The second nine weeks will consist of textiles-includes weaving, natural dying of yarns and wools, macrme, rugmaking, and batik. The third nine weeks unit will consist of sculpting, which is to include stained glass. The fourth nine weeks unit will consist of ceramics which will include each of the following: four types of hand built pottery of exhibit quality, student usage of potters's wheel, and student completion of two thrown pieces of exhibit quality pottery. Student will be responsible for project costs.

Crafts 2,3 (2nd semester)- 1 credit, 10-12, Pre-req: Art 1 & Crafts Advanced textiles, sculpting, ceramics, and stained glass are the main units of this class.

This class requires two projects each nine weeks. Upon completion the student critiques their work and the the work of their fellow classmates. Art History will be continued throughout the course. Students will research an artist and write a paper based upon that research. Student will be responsible for project costs.

Senior Studio- 12- Semester- 1/2 credit. INSTRUCTOR APPROVAL ONLY!!!

This select course is restricted to those highly advanced, highly motivated seniors who wish to further pursue a career in an art related field. Student will be responsible for project costs.
