Theme

 

 

This play is about eight people hiding in a small attic from death. The protagonist, Anne Frank, proves her invincible spirt by developing greater warmth and generosity during this ordeal. The words from her diary quoted near the end of the play sum up her triumph: "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."

 

 

To use the story of a young girl, Anne Frank, as a catalyst in an effort to understand better the four themes of the play:

1.Discrimination is cruel and irrational.

2.It is the ordinary citizen who discriminates.

3.Discrimination is a matter of personal choice.

4.Discrimination, prejudice, and racism not only existed in the past, but still exist today.  

 

Decide which of the themes above you believe best fits the story. Compare the theme to examples from the story and to life today. Write a one page essay exlaining your thoughts and feelings on the subject both during 1944 and 1999.
